My first post on this forum, and it is going to be a whinge :(

I loved the idea of Freecycle and I joined it full of enthusiasm. Yes I was interested what was offered/available but I also thought I might be able to give away some stuff that would be useful to other people.

I have to say that my overall experience is poor - I am shocked at the lack of manners that many show. Several people have asked for things, made plans to pick them up, never shown up, and then not had the courtesy to respond when I've asked them if they are still interested.

I have received abusive Emails from somebody who "lost out" when I offered a computer to somebody else (I had several replies and eventually tossed a coin). I am left with an impression of a bunch of ungrateful freeloaders interspersed with the genuine people.

I do object to car booters and Ebuyers wanting stuff for resale and state so when I post. I would rather give something to a charity shop than have some other individual make a profit - the whole concept of somebody using freecycle as a supply route for their own profit appals me.

There - I've vented now and feel much better :)

I still feel Freecycle is "a good thing" and have nothing but respect for those people who spend large amounts of time administering the system.

Hi

I am sorry you have had such a bad experience with Freecycle!

I have offered many, many items since this group started and I have never had a no-show.

Yes some people do come across as rude and manners cost nothing so emails stating "I want it" or "I'll come and pick it up now" without so much as a please or thank you do annoy me.

We have had very few complaints from members regarding other members but please do let me know if you have a problem with a particular member.

As for Ebayers and Car Booters, as I have stated before it is difficut to police, but I think as you get to know more members you realise who the genuine ones are. The ones that make profit without stating their intentions, I have no time for and I always remember who they are!

I sincerely hope that your future experience of Eastleigh Freecycle is much better and more polite!

Kind regards

Jules

Another rant about freecyclers and their manners -sorry.
I frequently post offered items on freecycle and have noticed people are definatly getting ruder.
I had a 'I want this I can collect today' reply to one of my recent items and as it was the ONLY reply and I want to get rid of the item (after waiting 2 more days incase I got someone more polite) decided to offer it to them and they have not bothered to reply. Im giving them until the end of the day then i'll be repoffering.
Also when people want an offered item why does it take them ages to reply? fair enough people dont get online often etc but someone again wanted another item and stated -eventually- when they could collect. so I gave them times for the following 2 days I'd be home & got no answer waited over the weekend and again got no answer. they have since replied and stated they will collect but this will be their last chance as others have been interested too.
I know I can complain about 'rude/problem' members but I dont like to complain about someone directly and always wonder if im not giving them enough chance, making something out of nothing etc.

How much of a chance do other freecyclers give for emails, collections etc?

I just dont understand how its so hard to be polite and kind, when really if your giving them something, your doing them a favour!!

Hi

Unfortunately some people tend to have automated responses and apply for things that they don't even really want, hence you hear nothing further from them!

Some people apply for an item and then decide they don't actually want it as much as they thought they did or realise that they can't collect and do not bother to let the 'offerer' know! SOmetimes it's rudeness and sometimes it's a case of just not wanting to let people down so they say nothing. Personally I would rather be told someone has changed their mind so I can offer to someone else.

I usually wait 24 hours from offering then send an email asking if the item is still wanted, then the next day send another one saying if I don't hear from them by the end of the day I will reoffer. If someone is totally serious about collecting then they will answer your original offer email and arrange collection and turn up on time, there are extenuating circumstances sometimes but members cannot be expected to hold an item for too long.

I have been running this site for a fair while now and am beginning to know who I do and do not want to offer things to, but for the most part I have been lucky and met some great people and feel the minority that are rude or serial no-showers are worth putting up with for all the good ones!

Kind regards

Jules

I'd prefer to be told too if they cant for whatever reason turn up, Its not like it has to be done face to face so surely that would make it easier to do?

Well from what youve said Jules I definatley give them too long (im too soft so my otherhalf says LOL)- I know theres no right or wrong way but its nice to know how other freecyclers do the whole process too.
Like you say too there are some really nice people out there. After another 'no show' I met a really nice lady and am glad that she ended up with the items in the end.

Hi all I'm new to this forum and may be out of step, I agree that most of us offering stuff on here just want it gone and you can only make judgements on people by how they ask for your give aways, I think most of sus out the takers after a while, personally I don't really care what happens to my stuff after I have given it away as it's no longer mine. I just hope I am able to give most things to a genuine receiver. ::) ::)
